Sheet 01 on the fitting rack. Head weight, shaft mass and playing length, balanced against how steeply you actually deliver the club, confirmed with dispersion rather than one good swing.

The Problem

Angle of Attack Gets Guessed at, Not Measured

Most driver mismatches trace back to a swing description nobody actually verified.

A shop that fits by asking "do you swing over the top or from the inside" is fitting off a story you tell about your own swing, which is a poor substitute for a launch monitor reading of what your club is actually doing at impact. Angle of attack — whether the head is moving up or down through the ball — drives launch angle and spin loft more than almost any other single variable, and it is invisible without instrumentation.

On our bench, angle of attack is measured across at least eight recorded swings before we talk loft, shaft or head. A driver built to a shallow, ascending strike and a driver built to a steep, descending strike are not variations on the same club — they are different specs entirely, and confusing the two is the single most common cause of a driver that looks fine in the mirror and underperforms on the course.

What Gets Measured

Four Variables, In This Order

First

Angle of Attack

Established before any component swap. Everything downstream is chosen relative to this number, not the other way around.

Second

Shaft Weight & Flex

Read off the frequency rig and matched to tempo, then confirmed against real ball flight rather than swapped on feel alone.

Third

Loft & Head Weight

Adjusted to bring launch and spin into a window that carries and holds a fairway rather than maximizing one number at the expense of the other.

Fourth

Playing Length

Set last, since length changes swingweight and dispersion together. A longer shaft that adds five yards and ten extra feet of miss left or right is rarely a net gain.

Why It's Re-Checked Annually

A Driver Head Loosens Before It Cracks

Repeated re-sleeving, mishits off the toe, and ordinary vibration over hundreds of rounds can loosen the connection between shaft and hosel well before anything visibly fails. A torque check once a year catches a head that has started to shift before it turns into an inconsistent face angle at impact that gets blamed on the swing instead of the equipment.

This check is quick — usually part of any other visit rather than its own appointment — and it is what keeps a driver spec on the ledger card trustworthy years after the original fitting.
